How to cancel eFax and keep your number

Do it in this order: port first, cancel second. A fax number can only be ported while the account that holds it is active. If you cancel first, the number can be released back to the carrier pool, and no new provider can recover it for you. Every year practices lose numbers that have been on their letterhead for a decade because they clicked cancel before starting the port.

Here is the safe sequence, start to finish.

Step 1: Decide whether the number matters

If the number is printed on your letterhead, filed with payers, listed in provider directories, or known to referring offices, it matters. Plan to keep it. If it was a temporary number you never gave out, you can skip porting and go straight to cancellation.

Step 2: Start the port at your new provider

Porting is initiated by the provider you are moving TO, not the one you are leaving. You will typically need:

• A recent bill or invoice showing the number and the account holder's name
• A Letter of Authorization, which the new provider prepares for you to sign
• The account details exactly as your current provider has them on file

Step 3: Wait for the port to complete

Your number keeps working with eFax until the moment the port lands, so there is no service gap. Do not cancel during this window. When the port completes, faxes to your number arrive at your new provider automatically.

Step 4: Cancel eFax

As of September 2, 2026, eFax's cancellation page describes these routes:

• Online through the Billing section of your account
• By chat, email, or phone
• Accounts with more than one number, an outstanding balance, or an annual plan are directed to contact an agent (the page lists 1-323-817-3207) rather than cancel online

Four terms to know before you start, all from eFax's published agreement: no refund is made for a billing period once it begins; a $40 administrative fee applies to release each number to another provider, with a 30-day notice window; any balance in the $10 usage prepay wallet is forfeited; and stored faxes become inaccessible once the account closes, so download what you need first.

Ask for a written confirmation of the cancellation date, and keep it.

Step 5: Update the places your number lives

If you ported, nothing changes for the outside world: same number, new provider. If you took a new number instead, update payer files, provider directories, letterhead, and your EHR profile, and consider notifying your top referring offices directly.
