Does SimplePractice have fax?

The short answer: no. SimplePractice does not include faxing, and the company says so plainly. Its help center states, in the plan comparison article's FAQ (read August 24, 2026):

"SimplePractice doesn't currently support eFaxing. While we don't have plans to add this feature at this time, you can use a third-party HIPAA compliant eFax solution if faxing documentation is required."

So if you run your practice on SimplePractice and a payer, a physician's office, or a court asks you to fax something, the answer is a separate, HIPAA-compliant fax service that runs alongside your EHR. SimplePractice does not name one. This guide covers what to look for and how the workflow actually feels day to day.

Why faxing still comes up in a SimplePractice practice

Even a fully digital practice hits fax requests from the outside world:

• Records requests from primary care physicians and psychiatrists
• Release of Information paperwork routed to and from other offices
• Insurance and prior authorization forms that payers still process by fax
• Court and attorney requests, which often specify fax delivery
• E-prescribing enrollment, which requires a fax number as a backup channel (covered in detail in Do I need a fax number for e-prescribing?)

None of that requires a fax machine. It requires a fax number that is yours, receives inbound pages reliably, and is covered by a Business Associate Agreement.

What to look for in the third-party service

SimplePractice's advice is right: the service must be HIPAA compliant. In practice that means four checks.

1. A signed BAA, before your first page. The Business Associate Agreement is what makes a fax vendor legally able to handle PHI for you. Some services only offer a BAA on higher tiers, or make you request it by form. Read the agreement before you pay. Ours is public at faxpigeon.com/baa, no account required.
2. Your own inbound number. A send-only tool covers half the job. Records and referrals come TO you, so you need a dedicated number that lands incoming faxes in a secure inbox.
3. Porting freedom. If your practice already has a fax number, the service should port it in free. Just as important: check what it costs to port OUT. A number you cannot take with you is not really yours.
4. Honest page math. Know the monthly page allowance, the overage rate, and whether failed sends are billed. Surprises here are the most common complaint in fax service reviews.
