How much does a fax cost per page?

A page costs 1.0¢ to 2.5¢ on a Fax Pigeon plan billed annually and 65¢ a page for a full 10-page fax at OneFaxNow or SingleFax, two pay-per-fax HIPAA services. FedEx Office prices a local fax from $2.19, and The UPS Store's fax page lists no price. A plan's per-page cost is its price divided by the pages it includes.

What does a page cost, by way to fax?

HIPAA calls for a written agreement with a vendor that handles a practice's patient information (45 CFR 164.502(e)), so the table compares services with a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) available, plus the two stores for scale. Plan prices are monthly, and every included page is assumed used. A pair of figures is billed annually, then month to month; other rows say which.

What do FedEx Office and The UPS Store charge for a fax?

FedEx Office's store pages say pricing starts at $2.19 to send a local fax and $2.49 to send a domestic one, and at $1.59 to receive one. The store and national fax pages print no per-page rate. The national page says prices vary by store and that a received fax is paid for at the counter.

The UPS Store's faxing page prints no price. It says prices vary by location and describes its locations as independently owned and operated by franchisees. Neither fax page mentions a BAA.

At FedEx Office's starting price, one local fax ($2.19) buys 87 pages on Fax Pigeon Basic billed annually. A month of Basic costs less than three such faxes.

When does pay per fax cost more than a plan?

In any month that has a fax. One fax is $6.50 for up to 10 pages at OneFaxNow or SingleFax and $9.99 at TidyFax, and a month of Basic is $5.99. Billed annually, Basic is $59.88 a year; nine faxes at $6.50 come to $58.50 and ten to $65.00.

The price is per fax, so the page count sets the per-page cost: $6.50 for one page, 65¢ a page for a full 10, 10¢ for a full 100 at SingleFax. OneFaxNow counts a cover page as a page, and TidyFax prices one file of up to 20 MB at $9.99 for up to 10 pages and 30¢ for each page past 10.

All three send only: OneFaxNow does not receive inbound faxes, TidyFax provides no incoming number, and SingleFax sells its fax numbers separately from its pay-per-fax send. Fax Pigeon's first fax, up to 10 pages, is free with no credit card. The detail is in HIPAA fax without a subscription.

What does an extra page cost?

Past the allowance, a Fax Pigeon page costs the plan's own rate: 10¢ on Basic, 5¢ on Standard, 4¢ on Plus, 3.5¢ on Pro, 3¢ on Premium and 2¢ on Max. It is billed on a separate invoice, at renewal on a monthly plan and every 30 days on an annual one, and faxes keep arriving past the page budget. SRFax charges 5¢ on most healthcare plans, WestFax Solo 3¢, eFax Business 7¢, Fax.Plus Enterprise 3¢ and Sfax 10¢. iFax's pricing page says there are no overage fees, while its Terms of Use top up credits by default when usage reaches 95% of the plan limit and bill the payment method.

An extra Basic page is 10¢, four times the 2.5¢ in-plan page. Month to month, 300 pages on Basic cost $15.99 (5.3¢ a page) against $11.99 on Standard (4.0¢), and the two cost the same at 260 pages. Billed annually the crossover is 250.

Which meters change the cost per page?

A plan's price divided by its pages is a cost per page only when the plan counts what you use. Three meters break that: minutes, attempts and one direction.

  • Minutes. On certain plans eFax counts the greater of the actual pages or the 60-second increments of connection time, so a one-page fax that connects for 1 minute 6 seconds is two pages. Documo prices a page on a 60-second transmission and says slower pages may be charged as several.
  • Attempts. eFax also bills each outbound attempt in which a transmission occurs, completed or not.
  • One direction. FaxRx meters outbound pages only: its $15 Starter plan covers 300 pages sent, and receiving is unmetered. Notifyre's $4.90 Plus plan covers 200 pages received, with sending at 3¢ a page from prepaid funds ($10 minimum). A month of 100 pages sent and 100 received is $7.90 on Notifyre Plus, 3.95¢ a page, and $5.99 on Fax Pigeon Basic, 3.0¢.

Fax Pigeon states its plans in pages a month, sent and received combined. To compare any plan, divide its price by the pages you send plus the pages you receive.

Who should switch?

  • A practice that faxes through pay per fax or a store counter in most months. One $6.50 fax costs more than a month of Basic, and FedEx Office charges from $1.59 to receive one.
  • A practice on eFax Business or iFax Plus. At 500 pages they are 6.7¢ and 5.0¢ a page billed annually, against 2.0¢ on Standard.

Every Fax Pigeon plan includes every feature, among them a signed BAA executed at signup, unlimited people at no extra cost and an AI summary of every inbound fax. The pricing page lists all six plans.
